Jewish life 2000 years ago is incredibly well docummented and no, there wasn't such thing as falafel then. The concept of 'orthodox, reform, conservative, etc' Judaism is a modern concept invented in the late 1800's. Yes, 2000 years ago there were different sects of Judaism but not the same as the modern concept.  
Again, ONE specific species of locust is concidered to be kosher. That being said, it would never have been a diet staple, especially concidering that they're rarely around. Israel could go years without seeing this type of locust which last year's swarm being a prime example. No idea who your John is but if he likes hanging out in deserts eating bugs then perhaps you should get him to a psychiatrist.
