Among the world's mass media mediums, NetNewsAsia has a global reputation as the prophet of the press. We know what's going to happen, because it's usually happened before.

This time last year, we rolled out our big crystal ball and forecast a bunch of events that we reckoned were sure bets for the year ahead: from Barack Obama's election, to the new iPhone. And were we proved right? Too bloody right we were!

Discovery Bay's cuddly, caring cutbacks

Residents of the Hong Kong suburb of Discovery Bay were naturally sceptical when they received a “survey on ferry service revamp & fare increase”. But it wasn’t really a survey, so much as a ballot telling them to choose between a 62% fare increase, or a massive reduction in services.

Bells will ring out across Manila this evening, and thousands of the Catholic faithful will parade through the city proclaiming their right to interfere in other people's most personal business.
