Ten years ago today, the world watched rapt as Britain returned its last notable overseas property to the original landlord. On 1 July 1997, Britain finally ended its Asian adventures, as it gave Hong Kong back to China. A decade later, Hong Kong is still not doomed.

As Chris Patten bids his last farewells and the first volley in a
multimillion dollar three day fireworks display light the sky, world
leaders will gather in Wanchai to observe the swearing in of Hong
Kong's controversial new legislature.
But throughout the territory, many local eyes - and hearts - will be on events a short distance away in Central. Just before the new Legco is sworn in,
crowds will gather for a demonstration that promises to test new laws
even before they are officially on the books.

Beijing, along with much of the world's media, likes to portray Hong Kong as a "non-political" city. The
textbook claim is that local people, driven by economic self-interest, are
simply not interested in politics.
It's true that in contrast to the US,
this place is no hotbed of dissent, but while the city's frenetic pace
leaves many people too tired to take an active political role, they are by no
means apathetic.
